The Australian Federal Police facility located in Cairns is a 3,200m2, two-storey commercial office building. The AFP building was designed to provide a safe environment to support AFP operations nationally and internationally on a 24/7 basis.

The AFP brief was to design a building structure that achieves the level of robustness required by the Australian Federal Police Physical Security Requirements. To achieve the strength, serviceability, fire resistance and durability requirements, McVeigh designed a structure using reinforced concrete floor slabs and column design, rendered corefilled blockwork external walls with sunscreens and ‘Alucabond’ cladding to exposed columns and beams. This product is aluminium sheeting used on the external surfaces to achieve a clean facade finish.

The site civil works included bulk earthworks, pavement layout and pavement design, stormwater catchment and drainage design and linemarking for the internal car park area, circulation roads and driveway crossover. McVeigh liaised with local authorities and neighbouring properties to successfully resolve minor site issues, such as a pre-existing issue with the overland flow of stormwater which resulted in the implementation of stormwater collection and diversion to the lawful point of discharge.
